Creative and Stylish Ways to Divide up Space
Hanging Room Dividers and Other Fun Choices

Are you looking for creative ways to divide up space?

If so, then you might want to try curtain hanging dividers and other creative alternatives.

These dividers are great choices when the conventional room divider is just too boring for you.

Room dividers can be unique, stylish and flexible. Which type of room dividers to use will depend on your needs, requirements and personal taste.

Let’s go over some things you might want to consider about each choice and then you can decide for yourself which is best for you.

Consider the following fun and unique ways to liven up your small place using room dividers…

Use Curtains as Room Dividers

Using curtains as room dividers is a very attractive option. The reason is because the flexibility and variety available is limitless. Curtain room dividers are capable of sectioning off an entire room—from ceiling to floor. Not to mention, the flexibility of curtain dividers continues with the option to open and close them any time you want.

You have control over whether you want complete privacy, partial privacy or if you want the room completely open.

Benefits continue with the ability to choose any theme or curtain style available. As said above, this makes all options virtually limitless, since there are countless styles of curtains out there that you may choose from.

And if you can’t find what you want. Well, you always have the option to have them custom-made. Art and crafts stores make it possible with there large selection of fabric choices.

But there are other alternatives you can consider, as well.

Let’s list them all so you’ll be in no doubt of the options available…

Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to be good with a needle and thread. You could always ask a friend or ask peers and co-workers if they know of anyone. Eventually, word through the grapevine will usually deliver a promising result.

And one last thing to keep in mind, if you’re unsure about what size curtains will work well in your home. Usually, a good place to start is with 84" long panels. You’ll find these will typically work for most homes. But, if they don’t suit your needs, then you’ll want to move up to 96" long panels.

Use Plants as Room Dividers

If the thought never crossed your mind, you can use indoor-friendly plants or trees as room dividers. All you need are the right plants to do the job.

After that, you’ll need something to put them in so that they will be beautifully displayed in your home.

You have the choice of the following containers…

Any of those choices will aid in creating a room divider that’s both gorgeous and cost-effective.

Cutting costs with the containers is only pertinent when you’re on a budget. So, if you find all of the containers you come across are too expensive, consider making your own.

The shape of a container box is simple enough, that if you are artistic or good with art and crafts, then alternatives besides the obvious might work in your favor.

Here are a few ways you could create your own container….

If you decide to buy wood, once you decide on what size you want it to be, you may want to get them to cut the pieces (of wood) down to the right size for you at the hardware store.

And then once you get home you could hammer the pieces together. You can even stain the box and decorate it according to your own personal taste.

When you’re finished, you can simply line the box with some plastic liner or heavy duty tarp as an added precaution. I’m not a plant expert but I assume this won’t interfere with how well a plant grows.

What Kind of Plant Should You Use?

If you’re looking for the right type of plant that would make a good room divider, consider a fairly obvious choice. A bamboo.

There are a variety of bamboos to choose from that make great indoor plants. American Bamboo Society and the DIY Network offer you great advice on growing bamboo successfully indoors. And once you’re done checking them out, you can visit JMBamboo Nursery to select and purchase the bamboo of your choice.

Then once you get it growing, you could cut it so it will grow new shoots (i.e. re-root it), until your divider is complete.

Other Large Plants or Trees Worth Considering

If you’re not happy with the idea of having a bamboo, a few other large plants or trees you may want to consider are…

For more ideas and a nice detail-oriented list on each plant or tree, you’ll want to visit Bachman’s Floral Home and Garden.

I’m willing to guess the best way to create room dividers with these large plants or trees is to put them in individual pots and place them side by side as opposed to putting them all in one planter together.

However, be aware that some of these won’t offer complete privacy. They are just simply a pleasant and beautiful way to section off a room.

Another alternative is silk trees, but the downside is that silk trees are an expensive choice. So, it’s not the option to go with if you don’t have a fairly large budget.

Use Trellises as Room Dividers

Trellises are a similar, yet different option from using plants as room dividers. They make fabulous room dividers because they are beautiful and you can use a variety of plants to make your trellis stand out even more in your home.

With trellises, you can get one that comes with a planter box, buy a planter box separately and combine them later or simply use a trellis on its own. If you decide to use a trellis on its own, be certain to look for one that will stand up by itself.

Some trellises are required to be rooted in the ground in order to be stable. So that makes them impossible to use indoors without a container or planter box to root them in.

Personally, if I had to recommend one out of all three choices, I’d recommend getting a trellis that already comes with a planter box. It keeps things simple and worry-free. No unexpected surprises.

Height should be of particular notice with trellis room dividers, since many range around 72-84" high. You’ll find that most rooms will accomodate these sizes.

However, if you’re not looking for something particularly tall, then you’ll want to be certain to go with something around the height of your typical room divider which is often 50-60" high.

There are trellis with planter boxes that are this low, yet keep in mind the product line is fairly scarce. So, for now, you won’t have much to choose from.

Once you’ve got your trellis and planter, you now have the luxury of making it shine. This is an opportunity in which you can create an indoor mini garden out of your room divider and have guests talking for days about how breath-taking your garden-style room divider is.

The planter that comes with the trellis will allow you to plant some beautiful, yet colorful flowers and plants that will flourish indoors and the trellis gives you an opportunity to show off gorgeous vines from your climbing plant.

A few indoor-friendly vines or climbing plants that you could grow on your trellis are…

A more comprehensive list may be found at AllExperts.com

Having said that, don’t forget you can decorate your trellis in other unconventional ways to make it shine even more.

If you really want to get creative, you could even consider adding a water fountain inside the planter to make it a one-of-a-kind room divider tailored to your unique taste.

But before you consider getting any kind of plant, a word of warning…

If you have pets, be certain the plant isn’t toxic to animals. One plant that is known to be toxic to animals is the Philodendrons. So before getting any plant, be certain to make absolutely sure it’s animal-friendly.

One great place to check is the Vet Med Library.

It has a comprehensive list of plants toxic to animals. However don’t assume that all of them are listed here. Do specific searches on each plant yourself so that you’re completely sure.

What Does This Mean to You?

Room dividers don’t have to be boring. They can be creative, stylish and fun. However, in order to have confidence concerning which choice suits you best, I’ve offered some thoughtful reasons as to why you might choose one room divider over another…

If you are looking for an affordable option that will offer you limitless choices then your first and foremost choice will be curtain room dividers.

They are one of the most versatile choices because they are so flexible. You can have complete privacy one moment and an open room the next. Not to mention your choices of style and theme are countless.

If adding life to a room is your interest, then plants or trees as room dividers will work well for you. However, with many plants complete privacy will not be possible. Instead your main focus should simply be on an elegant way to section off a room. If your tastes are that simple, then you will be very happy with this choice.

But, if you find that isn’t enough for you… don’t overlook the fact that you can double up on beauty by using this idea along with a trellis room divider. It has to be carefully done in order to look fabulous, but the potential is definitely there.

The same can be said for using trellises as room dividers: total privacy would not be a practical choice if your enamored with the idea of using a trellis to divide up space. The appeal should be the advantage of indoor gardening with a hint of subtle division between space.

If you’re lacking a patio or outside garden, then creating a mini garden room divider is your perfect chance to get your hands dirty.

And don’t forget, an extra bonus how much attention it will get from guests. Don’t be surprised if they’re talking about it long after they’ve left.
