China’s rapid social changes are causing psychological stress among its people. Working pressure, money, marriage and children are key issues of concern and are creating demand for professional counseling services more than ever before. Most clients face marital or familial problems. Many have troubled relationships with their children.
Although the number of licensed psychological counselors across the country currently stands at 110,000, there remains a huge gap between the supply and demand. About 400,000 more counselors are needed in China’s urban areas, according to the United States standard, which puts the therapist to patient ratio at one counselor for every 1,000 people.
Currently, more than 20,000 licensed psychological counselors were trained online within the past five years. Distance learning is attracting more and more people interested in psychology, because it offers particular advantages over traditional classroom learning. Many who wish to study psychological counseling are professionals with demanding jobs, so they need the flexibility distance learning provides. They can arrange their studies around their schedules and can make full use of shared pedagogical resources,
But because China is still at a rapid transformational social stage, the need for professional psychological counselors will continue to grow.
Although, therapists are in short supply in China compared to developed countries, the domestic counseling service industry now stands at a crossroads, For most Chinese nowadays, it takes courage to visit a counselor. However, it takes much more courage to become a counselor, Another challenge to the industry is that it faces a confusing management system,
Psychologists must first change themselves before they can help others change. Counselors must delve into and resolve their own problems before treating clients. If they don’t, they might avoid related topics when they would come up during their patients’ treatments, or, they might bring their own emotional baggage into the mix. And this could cause clients more harm than good.
But we should trust that future for psychological counselors is bright in China.
